As we step into the new year, I’ve been struck by the sheer variety of LinkedIn posts about setting intentions, goals, and resolutions for the year ahead. Some people choose words to guide their year; others dive into detailed goal-setting frameworks or reflect deeply on the year past. And then there are those who take a more intuitive approach—or skip the process entirely—not feeling the need to formally mark the transition from one year to another in a formal way. The truth is, there’s no one right way to do this. How we choose to reflect, reset, or move forward is deeply personal.
For me, I’ve found that an annual More of This, Less of That list works beautifully. It’s simple, adaptable, and keeps me focused on what matters most. Each year, I reflect on what has served me well and what hasn’t. Then I create a list that becomes my guidepost for the year ahead. It’s not about rigid rules but about gentle direction.
For example, this year’s list includes things like:
More:
Yoga
Live music
Being present in my moments
Moments of reflection—asking myself, "What do I need? What do others need?"
Less:
Time on my phone
Impulse purchases
Leaning into brain swirl
Distractions that don’t align with my priorities
The beauty of this approach is its flexibility. It’s not a static document. I check in with it periodically to see how I’m doing. Sometimes life shifts, and the list evolves with it. At the end of the year, I reassess and create a new list that reflects where I am and where I want to go next.
This year’s list feels especially poignant because 2025 marks a significant transition—the end of one General Counsel role and the beginning of a new one. It’s not just the transition into a new year; it’s the transition into a new chapter of my career and life. My More and Less list will be a tool to help me navigate this change. It also gives me a chance to think about how we deliver our Ready Set GC programs. While I am not a "new" GC—this is my third GC role—it allows me to reflect on where our program participants are as they navigate their new roles. Some things come easier to me as an experienced GC, but some are the same challenges our participants face. This perspective helps me stay connected to their journey and informs how we shape our programming to best support them.
As we move into 2025, I’m wishing the entire Ready Set GC community a happy and fulfilling new year. I’m excited about the programs we have planned, the opportunities to stay connected with the incredible community we’ve built, and the chance to grow it even further. Together, let’s focus on how we show up—for ourselves, for each other, and for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
So here’s to 2025—to more of what inspires us and less of what holds us back.
